A milestone in Nigeria’s infrastructural renewal — Oborevwori

In a significant stride towards national infrastructural development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has officially flagged off the construction of the access road to the Second Niger Bridge, linking Delta and Anambra States.

Speaking at the ceremony, on Monday March 24, 2025, Governor Oborevwori conveyed the President’s unwavering commitment to fostering connectivity and economic growth across the country.

He lauded President Tinubu’s dedication to national development, emphasizing that the Renewed Hope Agenda remains steadfast in ensuring the expansion and modernization of critical infrastructure.

The Second Niger Bridge, which was opened to motorists in December 2022, has already transformed road transportation between the Southeast and the rest of Nigeria.

However, the construction of its access roads is expected to further enhance connectivity, improve road safety, and boost trade and commerce, hallmarks of the region’s economic vibrancy.

“This project is a direct response to the challenges faced by road users and underscores our commitment to national infrastructural renewal,” Governor Oborevwori stated.

“We sincerely appreciate Mr. President’s leadership and vision in prioritizing these critical road networks that serve as lifelines for trade, commerce, and national unity.”

The flag-off of this project follows closely on the heels of the recent concessioning and rehabilitation of the Benin-Asaba Expressway in Edo State, another strategic link facilitating movement between the Southwest, South-South, and Southeast regions.

These projects, along with the ongoing multi-billion-naira Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, underscore the administration’s resolve to construct, reconstruct, expand, and modernize Nigeria’s road, rail, and waterway networks.

Governor Oborevwori acknowledged the cooperation and support of both Delta and Anambra State governments, stressing the importance of synergy in fostering national progress.

He also called on motorists to exercise patience during the construction period, assuring them that the project would be executed to the highest global standards.

“As progressive leaders, it is our responsibility to spearhead development across the nation. I am confident in the capacity of the contractors to complete this project on schedule and with the quality Nigerians deserve,” he affirmed.

He said: “A strong and resilient economy is built on the ability of the government to build modern infrastructure, provide public amenities, and expand social services.

“Facilitate easy mobility, create employment opportunities, boost tourism, engender free movement of goods and services from production centers to sales outlets, and improve overall quality of life.”

“It is an open secret that the existing infrastructure in Nigeria does not match our growth aspirations. Indeed, for Nigeria to become a global economic powerhouse, we must upgrade and modernize our infrastructure, which are imperative for the country’s economic prosperity.

“It is against this backdrop that this administration is determined to construct, reconstruct, expand, and modernize our road, rail, and water networks as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

“Multi-billion-naira Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road and other critical road infrastructure projects in different parts of the country, which will undoubtedly enhance rural-urban integration and connect transporters, traders, entrepreneurs, and investors to vital commercial hubs and industrial corridors.

“As we flag off this project today, I want to commend the governments of Delta and Anambra States for their cooperation and support. This kind of partnership and synergy are imperative for trust, good governance, national cohesion, and sustainable development.”

“Naturally, there will be some inconveniences in movement during this period. I have confidence in the capacity of the contractors to not only complete the job on schedule, but also deliver quality in line with global best standards.”.

With the official commencement of the access road construction, the Second Niger Bridge is set to fulfill its full potential as a gateway to economic prosperity, regional integration, and enhanced mobility for millions of Nigerians.
