Former Delta State Governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) South-South Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors (RHA), Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has called on Nigerians to re-elect President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election, insisting that the President requires a second term to consolidate the reforms and achievements recorded by his administration.
Okowa, who is also the APC candidate for the Delta North Senatorial District, made the appeal while receiving the national leadership of the Working People United (WPU) during a courtesy visit to his residence in Asaba, the Delta State capital.
He said President Tinubu assumed office at a critical period in Nigeria’s history and had since demonstrated the courage needed to confront longstanding economic and governance challenges through bold policy decisions.
The former governor defended key reforms introduced by the administration, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy, describing the policy as a difficult but necessary step that has strengthened the financial capacity of states and local governments.
According to him, the improved revenue allocation has enabled sub-national governments to meet salary obligations and stabilize their finances.
“Beyond the removal of fuel subsidy, President Tinubu has expanded the economy to the point where states and local governments are now financially stable. Before now, many states struggled to pay workers.
“As of May 2023, about 27 states owed salaries because they lacked the resources to pay. Today, states and local governments can meet their obligations. That did not happen by chance; it is the result of courageous leadership,” Okowa said.
He expressed confidence that sustaining the current reforms through a second term would reposition the nation’s economy and deliver greater benefits to Nigerians.
“We believe that if Nigerians give President Tinubu another mandate, he will consolidate these reforms and further redirect the economy toward meeting the aspirations of the people,” he added.
Okowa also highlighted the impact of the Federal Government’s National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), noting that more than 1.6 million tertiary institution students had accessed the scheme.
He described the student loan initiative as one of the administration’s landmark interventions, saying it had opened educational opportunities for thousands of young Nigerians.
According to him, many students who initially doubted the programme have now embraced it after witnessing its benefits, urging eligible beneficiaries to take advantage of the initiative.
The former governor maintained that the Tinubu administration deserved continuity to complete its ongoing economic and social reforms, expressing optimism that Nigerians would increasingly appreciate the long-term impact of the policies.
He also appealed to members of the Working People United to mobilize support for President Tinubu, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his own senatorial bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Earlier, National Coordinator of the Working People United, Comrade Williams Akporeha, said the delegation visited Okowa to formally introduce the organisation and inaugurate its Delta State chapter.
Akporeha explained that the group comprises workers in the public and private sectors, self-employed professionals and artisans, adding that it is committed to promoting good governance and responsible political participation.
He pledged the group’s support for President Tinubu’s re-election, Governor Oborevwori and Senator Okowa’s aspiration to represent Delta North in the Senate.
