Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has charged security agencies in the state to adopt a firm and uncompromising stance against criminality, directing the immediate arrest and prosecution of anyone found in possession of firearms or attempting to disrupt public peace, particularly as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
The governor gave the directive on Tuesday while receiving the newly deployed Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Aina Adesola, and members of his management team during a courtesy visit to Government House, Asaba.
Governor Oborevwori described the posting of CP Adesola to Delta State as a homecoming, noting that the police chief is well familiar with the state, having previously served in strategic operational capacities within the command. He expressed confidence in the Commissioner’s ability to sustain and strengthen the prevailing peace across the state.
According to the governor, the relative calm currently enjoyed in Delta State is a direct result of sustained collaboration among the police and other security agencies.
He commended CP Adesola for demonstrating professionalism, experience, and a deep understanding of the local security landscape since assuming office.
“I am particularly pleased that you are here because you understand this terrain very well. You have served here before and your impact was evident.
“Within the few weeks of your assumption of duty as Commissioner of Police, the state has remained peaceful, and we are proud of the results recorded so far,” Oborevwori said.
Reflecting on the security situation prior to 2023, the governor recalled a period when the open display of firearms by criminals and miscreants was rampant, creating fear among residents.
He stressed that such actions have since been decisively curtailed and would not be tolerated under his administration.
“Before now, people openly brandished firearms and caused widespread fear. Since 2023, that practice has stopped, and it will never return in Delta State,” he assured.
Governor Oborevwori also commended senior officers of the Delta State Police Command for their dedication and professionalism, specifically acknowledging ACP Aliyu Shaba and the former Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations for their critical roles in suppressing gun-related violence in previously volatile parts of the state.
As the state moves closer to another election cycle, the governor urged the police command to remain proactive and resolute in enforcing the law, reiterating that any individual found with illegal firearms or attempting to breach public peace must face the full weight of the law.
“We will not tolerate insecurity in this state. Anyone caught with firearms or attempting to disrupt peace must be arrested and prosecuted without exception,” he emphasized.
The governor further called on residents to support security agencies by providing timely and credible intelligence, describing security as a collective responsibility.
He noted that peace and stability are fundamental to development and economic growth, stressing that investors are attracted only to safe environments.
“Peace creates room for development. Without peace, investors will not come. That is why Delta State remains open for business,” Oborevwori stated.
Earlier, CP Aina Adesola expressed gratitude to the governor for the warm reception and reaffirmed the commitment of the Delta State Police Command to maintaining peace and security across the state.
He assured that under his leadership, the police would continue to work tirelessly to ensure that residents can live and conduct their lawful activities without fear, pledging that Delta State would remain peaceful and secure.
