The Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved the appointment of distinguished historian Samuel Ovuete Aghalino as the second substantive Vice Chancellor of Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba.
The appointment letter was presented to Professor Aghalino in Asaba by the State Commissioner for Higher Education, Nyerhovwo Tonukari, who described the development as a major milestone in the continued growth and consolidation of the relatively young university.
Professor Tonukari noted that the appointment reflects the commitment of the Oborevwori administration to strengthening higher education in Delta State by ensuring that state-owned institutions are led by scholars with proven academic excellence and strong administrative capacity.
According to him, Professor Aghalino’s extensive academic background and leadership experience place him in a strong position to guide the university into a new phase of development.
He charged the new Vice Chancellor to deploy his wealth of experience toward promoting cutting-edge research, strengthening teaching standards and advancing the institutional development of the university.
Professor Aghalino, a native of Owhelogbo in Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, is a Professor of History in the Department of History and International Studies at the University of Ilorin. Over the years, he has built a distinguished academic career spanning nearly three decades.
A respected scholar and intellectual, he previously served as President of the Historical Society of Nigeria, the country’s leading professional body for historians.
During his tenure, he played a significant role in advancing historical scholarship, strengthening research collaborations and promoting greater engagement between historians and public policy institutions.
Professor Aghalino began his academic career at the University of Ilorin in the mid-1990s as an Assistant Lecturer and steadily rose through the academic ranks to become a full Professor of History.
Throughout his career, he has held several key academic and administrative positions within the university, including Head of the Department of History and International Studies as well as Director of the University of Ilorin Archives and Documentation Centre.
Widely regarded as an authority in Economic and Social History, Professor Aghalino’s research has focused extensively on the political economy of the Niger Delta, particularly the historical impact of oil exploration and its socio-economic consequences for communities in the region.
His scholarly works have contributed significantly to ongoing debates on resource control, environmental justice and sustainable development in the Niger Delta.
A prolific academic, Professor Aghalino has authored and co-authored numerous books and scholarly articles published in reputable national and international journals.
One of his notable works, Oil Exploitation in the Western Niger Delta: A Cost-Benefit Analysis, 1956–1995, remains widely referenced in academic studies examining the historical and economic implications of oil production in the region.
Over the years, he has also participated in several international conferences and scholarly engagements across the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore and Kenya, where he presented research papers and collaborated with scholars on global academic platforms.
His contributions to scholarship and academic development have earned him several recognitions, including honours from the Historical Society of Nigeria for his outstanding service to the discipline.
Beyond academia, Professor Aghalino has served on various academic and public policy bodies, including governing councils of tertiary institutions and advisory committees on education and research.
He has also taken part in programme accreditation exercises for the National Universities Commission, contributing to efforts aimed at strengthening quality assurance in Nigeria’s university system.
