Commendations have continued to trail the quick response of the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, for responding timely to the call to end the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), over alleged brutality, killing and extortion of youths.

The governor also commended Nigerian youths who in the face of teething challenges, took to the streets against the activities of SARS operatives.

Okowa who took to his verified Facebook account on Sunday 11th October 2020, said: “Today, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, announced the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) nationwide. This disbandment is in response to the #EndSARS protests, which became a national and an international movement.

“This is a very welcome development and I commend the Inspector General of Police for acting in a decisive and prompt manner in responding to the legitimate concerns of all Nigerians”.

He pointed out that the Nigerian youth could take pride in the fact that they have won a major victory for the right to free movement and association.

While commending the Police for their restraint during these protests, he stated, “the disbandment of SARS is a visible demonstration of how government agencies should respond to the grievances of our people and their agitations for justice and good governance in a democracy”.

He insisted that the IGP should not stop at disbanding SARS, saying that their disbandment was the first step of the many that are required to carry out a comprehensive reform of the Nigerian Police Force.

“Such a reform should cover all matters that relate to recruitment, training and welfare of the rank and file”.

Meanwhile on Monday 12th October 2020, the Delta state governor posited: “Nigeria has witnessed the power of social media and the unquenchable energy of our youth, especially those who took to the streets to express their grievances peacefully.

“Make no mistake, we see you! We hear you! We are working to make things better”, said.
