The Director General, Delta State Traffic Management Agency, (DESTMA), Commandant Azubuike Sam Idah (rtd) has said that the Agency would commence marking strategic portions of the road with zebra crossing symbols to aid the protection of children within school domains.

He made the promise Wednesday 10th February, 2021, while playing host to members of the Delta State Child Rights Implementation Committee who were on advocacy visit to his office.

The DG affirmed that the project had already been provided for in 2021 budget, adding that as soon as memo is raised and approval given to access the fund, markings of the roads would commence in earnest.

Idah assured of the Agency’s cooperation to help the Committee manage the safety of children as well as enforce the Child Rights Law in the State.

He said that DESTMA had already been engaged in crossing children over the road to their schools, promising to intensify effort on that, especially sensitizing schools and children who might be stubborn to want to cross on their own.

On the issue of child trafficking, he said his officers can only identify trafficked children in tricycle (Keke) by asking salient questions, but it might be difficult if they were smuggled through vehicles or other discreet means.

Earlier in his speech to the DG, the Chairman of the Advocacy Sub-Committee of the Child Rights Implementation Committee, Ven. Kingsley Dieli had appealed to Commandant Idah to encourage his men to do more in ensuring the safety of children, especially during school runs.

He said helping to cross the children over the road is important to the state, as well as arresting children who are not in school during school hours.

Ven. Dieli equally advocated collaboration in the area of strict and intelligent monitoring of movement of vehicles and tricycles to check child trafficking.
