The Delta State Waste Management Board has commenced the fumigation of dump sites across the state, beginning in Asaba, as part of renewed efforts to promote environmental sanitation, curb disease-carrying pests and safeguard public health.

The exercise, which was supervised on Tuesday by the Acting Chairman of the Board, Hon. Mrs Ethe Enifome Odunwa, forms part of ongoing measures to improve environmental hygiene and create cleaner, safer and healthier communities across the state.

The fumigation operation is aimed at reducing the environmental health risks associated with accumulated refuse, particularly the proliferation of flies, mosquitoes and other disease-carrying pests that thrive in poorly maintained waste disposal sites.

By targeting dump sites, the initiative seeks to improve sanitary conditions in affected areas, minimise potential health hazards and strengthen efforts to maintain a cleaner environment for residents.

The commencement of the exercise in Asaba marks the beginning of an operation expected to extend to other parts of Delta State, reflecting the government’s commitment to sustained environmental management and improved waste disposal practices.

Odunwa’s supervision of the exercise underscores the importance attached to the operation and the need for continued interventions to address environmental sanitation challenges.

Residents have also been urged to complement the government’s efforts by disposing of refuse at designated locations, avoiding indiscriminate dumping and ensuring that their homes, business premises and immediate surroundings remain clean.

The government’s intervention highlights the importance of collective responsibility in environmental protection, as effective waste management requires not only official action but also the active participation of individuals and communities.

With the fumigation exercise commencing in Asaba and expected to reach other areas, the initiative is aimed at advancing environmental cleanliness, reducing sanitation-related risks and promoting a healthier living environment for the people of Delta State.
