Delta Government Orders Measures To Address Gridlock At Otovwido Flyover Site

The Delta State Government has taken decisive steps to address the persistent traffic congestion around the ongoing Otovwodo Junction Flyover project in Ughelli.

This was disclosed on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, during an assessment visit to the project site.

He was accompanied by officials of the Ministry’s Highways and Urban Roads Department, representatives of Julius Berger Nigeria Limited, and the Community Liaison Officer.

Izeze said the visit was prompted by numerous complaints from motorists and residents affected by the heavy traffic caused by the construction.

He noted that Otovwodo Junction serves as a strategic transit corridor for travellers to and from the South-South, South-East and South-West regions.

He explained that the traffic situation has worsened due to the surge in haulage trucks diverting to the route to avoid the deplorable Benin–Sapele–Warri Road.

“This route is currently carrying an enormous burden,” he stated. “It remains the only viable link for travellers heading to and from Port Harcourt, Warri, Asaba, Onitsha and even Lagos.

With many haulage vehicles diverting through the Agbor–Asaba axis because of poor road conditions elsewhere, this corridor has become overstretched.”

According to him, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori ordered the inspection to ensure that, while major infrastructure is being delivered under the MORE Agenda, citizens do not endure unnecessary hardship.

“There is a philosophy driving Governor Oborevwori’s administration,” Izeze said. “As we deliver meaningful development, realistic reforms, opportunities for all, and enhanced peace and security, we must also ensure that the people are not subjected to avoidable discomfort.

That is why we are here, to assess the situation firsthand and provide immediate solutions.”

During the inspection, the team identified an alternative route connecting Okogbe Street that had previously been closed.

The Commissioner confirmed that the state government has directed Julius Berger to reopen the access road to ease movement, especially for articulated vehicles.

“We have instructed Julius Berger to open up this barricaded side road to facilitate easier passage, particularly for lorries,” he said.

Izeze further disclosed that discussions are ongoing with the contractor regarding the installation of reinforced barricades to prevent heavy-duty trucks from diverting into fragile inner streets that cannot accommodate their weight as they head toward the Yenagoa–Port Harcourt Expressway.

He assured road users that the state government remains committed to minimising disruptions associated with the construction while fast-tracking work to deliver the flyover within the stipulated timeline.
