The Delta State Government has unveiled an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system, popularly known as Plate Detect, in a decisive move to strengthen traffic law enforcement and promote safer road usage across the state.
The introduction of the technology was conveyed in a special government announcement signed by the Director of Public Communication and Functioning Permanent Secretary, Stella Macaulay.
The statement informed residents and motorists that the advanced monitoring system has been fully deployed on major roads across Delta State to track vehicular activities and identify traffic violations in real time.
The ANPR system operates through strategically positioned surveillance cameras capable of automatically scanning vehicle number plates and cross-referencing them with a centralized database.
The intelligent technology is designed to detect a range of traffic offences, including expired vehicle documentation, over-speeding, and violation of traffic signals such as running red lights.
According to the state government, once a violation is detected, the system will promptly alert the vehicle owner through phone calls and text messages sent to the registered contact number linked to the vehicle.
The notification will provide details of the offence and guide the offender on how to settle the applicable fines through the official state payment portal, www.paydelta.ng.
Authorities explained that the initiative forms part of the state government’s broader commitment to modernizing traffic management and enforcement, while reducing accidents caused by reckless driving and disregard for road safety regulations.
Motorists have been cautioned that failure to settle outstanding penalties could affect the renewal of vehicle particulars and may also result in the impoundment of the vehicle by relevant enforcement agencies.
The Directorate of Transport therefore urged motorists to ensure their vehicle documentation remains valid and up to date, while strictly complying with traffic rules and safety guidelines at all times.
