APC Ward Chairmen Revolt In Delta North, Demand Suspension Of ‘Vindictive’ Congress

Ward chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta North Senatorial District have mounted strong opposition to the ongoing ward congress in the zone, calling for its immediate suspension and a fresh process they insist must be transparent and constitutionally compliant.

In a strongly worded protest letter addressed to the Delta State APC Chairman, Sobotie Omeni, the aggrieved ward leaders urged the party’s state leadership to halt the exercise and restart it under a framework that clearly allocates positions between longstanding party members and recent entrants.

The chairmen argued that the current consensus-based method being deployed in Delta North is not only exclusionary but also inconsistent with the party’s constitutional provisions.

They described the process as vindictive, alleging that it has systematically sidelined grassroots leaders and weakened internal democracy at the ward level.

According to the petitioners, loyal party members who laboured for the electoral victory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election are now being marginalised in the ongoing arrangements.

They further alleged that several individuals who previously belonged to opposition platforms, including some who contested on rival party tickets, have recently defected to the APC and are being unduly favoured in the emerging congress structure.

The protesting chairmen questioned the motives of the new entrants, suggesting that their interest in the party is driven more by political survival and the quest for renewed relevance than by genuine ideological commitment.

Warning of potential consequences, the ward leaders expressed concern that the growing influence of the new members could erode party cohesion, discipline, and grassroots stability across Delta North.

They also claimed that ward chairmen are being specifically targeted because of their resistance to internal manoeuvres they believe could undermine the President’s expected re-election bid, noting that their strategic grassroots positions make them critical to safeguarding party interests.

The aggrieved officials therefore called for urgent intervention by the state leadership to restore fairness, transparency, and constitutional order to the ward congress process in Delta North.

The protest letter was endorsed by representatives of ward chairmen from the nine local government areas in the senatorial district, including Frank Asimoye (Aniocha North), Onwuemene Gabriel (Aniocha South), Pastor Andrew Ehiyem (Ika North East), Nduka Erikume (Ika South), Kenneth Akadidi (Ndokwa East), Ochonogor Benjamin (Ndokwa West), Okocha Patrick (Oshimili South), and Emma Odogwu Chukwuekwu (Oshimili North).
