As Nigerians, especially the youths are yet to recover from police (SARS) brutality which led to a nationwide protest tagged: “#ENDSARS”, the police have allegedly crushed a mother and her four months old baby in PTI junction of Warri, Delta state.
Trouble started Wednesday 20th January 2021, when the police who are from Ebrumede Divisional Police Station allegedly chasing after some suspected yahoo boys hit a tricycle conveying the woman and her baby, killing them on the spot.
Miffed by the incident, irate youths set the police van ablaze as a way of driving home their grievances against the police.
A post on Facebook by one Terry Ukavwe, reads: “Report from Warri this afternoon.
“Police Van allegedly hit keke conveying mother and child killing both while chasing Suspected Yahoo boys, as angry youths set Police Van ablaze”.
Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, debunked the allegation.
The image maker, disclosed that it was a 911 that ram into the tricycle and not the police van as reported.Hear her: “that is not true, they said a tipper hit a keke (tricycle), that was carrying a woman and a young child. There was an accident, so they are trying to link it to the police. The police did not crush anybody or shot at anybody”.
But when asked what led to the burning of the police van? She said: “Anger”.
