The Commissioner for Primary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu (JP), has said the 4th Edition of the Zenith Bank Delta State Headmasters’ Football Competition, is “an investment in the dreams and future of Delta’s children.”
The spectacular ceremony, held at St. Patrick’s College, Asaba, on Tuesday October 28, 2025, drew education stakeholders, sports enthusiasts, pupils, and community leaders from across the state.
Dr. Ashibogwu said the Headmasters’ Cup, a grassroots tournament has become one of Delta’s most impactful platforms for youth empowerment, talent discovery, and educational development, praising the collaboration between the Delta State Government and Zenith Bank Plc as “a true model of public-private partnership that works.”
“This tournament is not just about football,” the Commissioner declared.
“It is about building character, discipline, and teamwork in our children. Through this competition, we are raising champions, not just for sports, but for life.”
He applauded Zenith Bank Plc for its consistent sponsorship, describing the bank as “a visionary corporate partner that continues to invest in the future of Nigerian children.”
“Zenith Bank has demonstrated what true corporate citizenship means, supporting education, empowering youth, and believing in the future of our great state,” he added.
The Commissioner also commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his unwavering support for education and sports development, noting that the administration’s policies continue to open doors for young talents across the 25 local government areas.
“Under Governor Oborevwori’s watch, we have seen renewed energy in our schools, from classrooms to the football fields.
“The Headmasters’ Cup is helping us shape complete citizens: sound in mind, body, and character,” Dr. Ashibogwu said.
According to him, preliminary matches will hold concurrently in all 25 local government areas, before moving to the zonal, quarterfinal, and semifinal stages, culminating in a grand finale that will showcase the best of Delta’s budding football stars.
Representatives of Zenith Bank Plc reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to supporting grassroots development, stating that the initiative aligns with the bank’s belief in “building future leaders through education and sports.”
The atmosphere at St. Patrick’s College was electric as Governor Oborevwori performed the ceremonial kick-off, signalling the official start of the tournament amid loud cheers and chants from excited pupils and spectators.
“Every great player begins somewhere,” Dr. Ashibogwu concluded with a smile.
“The next Okocha, Mikel Obi, or Asisat Oshoala might just be among these children today and we’re proud to give them this platform.”
The Zenith Bank Delta Headmasters’ Football Competition, now in its fourth edition, continues to stand as a testament to Delta State’s commitment to education, youth development, and sports excellence.
