Highlights From National Sports Festival In Edo

Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, led defending champions of the National Sports Festival, Team Delta, during the march past of the opening ceremony of the 20th edition of the games taking place in Benin City, Edo State.

Team Delta begins medals haul with Akiayefa Timi who won the first swimming gold medal in 200m Butterfly, while Akiayefa Timipame-ere won gold in 200m women butterfly.

Also, Osamezu Foresight claims another gold medal for Team Delta in swimming in the breast stroke event male category.

Ukpcereye Ese of Team Delta this morning won gold in cycling 1km female individual sprint event in a time of 1.26.70 seconds.

Okpochine Deborah, won the silver medal for Team Delta in the 1,500 free style women swimming.

Nmoh Ifeakachukwu grabs gold for Team Delta in men’s 200m medley beating national champion, Yello Yeigha, to second position in the swimming event of the 20th edition of the National Sports Festival.

Team Delta also won one gold and two silver medals in judo while Timipame-ere Akiayefa won her third gold medal after winning 200 meters backstroke women event.

Cycling added one gold medal and one bronze medal to Team Delta’s haul in the National Sports Festival.
Team Delta handball female just qualified to the semi -finals of the Edo 2020 games.

As at yesterday April 7th 2021, at 4:00pm, in the Edo 2020 Medals Table, Delta has 10 gold, 7silver and 4 bronze.

Bayelsa has 10 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze, Edo 3 gold, 7 silver and 9 bronze, Kwara 1 gold and 1 bronze while Kano has only three silver.

Meanwhile, the Local Organising Committee of the Edo2020 has announced that it would end the games abruptly today Thursday, April 8, 2021 for lack of funds

According to the Project Manager, Media and Communications, Ebomhiana Musa, the decision was reached during an emergency meeting.

Hear him: “Rising from an emergency meeting this evening, the LOC says it has to take this hard decision due to lack of funds having expended its reserves to kick start the games.

“Regrettably, the Federal Government (FG) is yet to redeem its pledge to support us as the host state financially for the cost of postponements.

“So, we are left with no option than to end the games at noon tomorrow”, he disclosed.
