A press release on Wednesday 20th January 2021, jointly signed by the Council Chairman, Comrade Mike Ikeogwu and the Secretary, Comrade Patrick Ochei, disclosed that it is to strengthen local government administration.
According to the release, “the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, in line with its constitutional mandate as Watchdog of the society and agenda setters, has come up with plans to have one on one session with candidates of participating political parties in the forthcoming Delta State Local Government Councils’ elections, scheduled to hold March 6, 2021.
“The programme christened “NUJ DELTA STATE COUNCIL PLATFORM” is an initiative of the Union geared towards strengthening Local Government Administrative system in the state.
“It has been observed over the years that the Local Government Council Administration has been deeply weakened by those entrusted with the responsibility of governance at that level. This is as a result of the way and manner they were chosen.
“It is against this backdrop that the NUJ is coming up with this programme to assess the preparedness of those gearing up to take up the mantle of leadership of the Local Government Administrative System.
“This will also enable the candidates unveil their plans, programmes and policies to the electorate, while the NUJ will in turn continue to follow up with its function of holding government and its functionaries accountable.
“The Union therefore uses this medium to call on all political parties fielding candidates for the forthcoming election to present them to appear at a date, time and venue as contained in the NUJ invitation letters already released”, the statement added.
