Former Senator and 2023 Kogi State governorship candidate, Dino Melaye, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), attributing his exit to the party’s failure to provide viable leadership capable of rescuing Nigeria from its deepening political and socio-economic crises.

In a resignation letter dated July 4, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Ward 1 Chairman in Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Melaye announced his immediate withdrawal from the party and all associated activities.

“This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation,” he stated.

Melaye explained that his departure followed a period of sober reflection on the state of the party, adding that he could no longer, “in good conscience,” continue to align with the PDP or promote its agenda.

The outspoken politician, known for his fiery rhetoric and flamboyant political style, has long been an ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who also resigned from the PDP earlier this month under similar circumstances.

Although Melaye and Atiku have yet to declare their next political destination, sources close to both figures suggest they may be heading to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as they explore new political platforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Melaye’s resignation marks another significant setback for the PDP, which continues to struggle with internal divisions, defections, and questions over its strategic direction in the post-2023 political landscape.
