The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), in collaboration with the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), is set to organize a five-day capacity-building workshop on Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education (SMASE) for 200 newly employed Mathematics and Science teachers across the 25 Local Government Areas of Delta State.
According to both UBEC and SUBEB, the training follows the successful completion of Phase One, Cycles 1 to 4 of the In-Service Education and Training (INSET) programme, which ran from 2012 to 2025 under the SMASE initiative.
The residential workshop, an initiative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Education (FME), is scheduled to hold from Monday, 20th to Friday, 24th October 2025, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily, at Anglican Girls Grammar School, Ughelli, in Ughelli North Local Government Area.
In a statement signed by the Director of the Teacher Development Department, Delta SUBEB, Mrs. Eru Ezefili, on behalf of the Executive Chairman of the Board, Hon. Samuel Mariere, the training, with the theme “Attitudinal Change in the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics and Science”, is designed to enhance teachers’ pedagogical skills and promote effective teaching and learning at the basic education level through the ASEI-PDSI (Activity, Student, Experiment, Improvisation, Plan, Do, See, Improve) approach.
The statement further emphasized that the workshop aims to drive a paradigm shift from traditional, teacher-centered methods to modern, learner-centered strategies that actively engage students in the learning process of Mathematics and Science.
Mrs. Ezefili noted that the training underscores the commitment of UBEC and SUBEB to continuously strengthen the capacity of teachers and improve the quality of basic education delivery in Delta State.
