As part of its ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), through its Centre for Human Resource Development (CHRD), organized a tree planting exercise aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and climate awareness.

The event was graced by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Sammani Rabo Butswat, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olufemi Peters.

In his remarks, Professor Butswat emphasized the vital role of trees in promoting ecological balance and public health.

“Planting trees is not just about beautifying our environment,” he stated. “It is an investment in the future of our planet. Trees improve air quality, reduce pollution, and provide essential habitats for wildlife.”

He further noted that beyond environmental benefits, trees contribute significantly to human health and well-being.

“Research has shown that green spaces reduce stress, enhance mental health, and can lower the risk of chronic illnesses,” he added.

Representing the Director General of the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, Dr. Zakaria Buba Yaduma, was Dr. Ariyo Christopher, Deputy Provost of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanization, Mando, Kaduna. Dr. Christopher stressed the necessity of collective action in preserving the environment.

“The importance of trees cannot be overstated. Trees are life. When we cut down trees without replanting, we are destroying life. But when we plant and nurture them, we are sustaining life,” he said.

He highlighted the multiple ecological functions of trees, from acting as windbreaks and preventing erosion to providing shade, absorbing carbon dioxide, and emitting oxygen.

He also underscored their medicinal value, noting that many trees serve as sources of traditional remedies.

Dr. Christopher expressed the institute’s willingness to collaborate with NOUN in implementing tree planting initiatives across its campuses nationwide.

“Our institute operates research stations across the country, with seven colleges spread across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones,” he explained.

“In Kaduna, we are privileged to have the Federal College of Forestry Mechanization, which trains middle-level manpower in agriculture, environmental sustainability, and forestry-related skills.”

In his welcome address, the Director of the Centre for Human Resource Development, Professor Aminu Umar, highlighted the broader importance of tree planting.

He reiterated that trees not only combat climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen but also serve as a legacy for future generations.

“Environmental protection is a shared responsibility. We must all act collectively to safeguard the planet and promote sustainability,” he urged.

The event also featured a practical showcase of skills acquisition programs offered at the NOUN Staff School, including carpentry, electrical installation, plumbing, hairdressing, and tailoring.

Pupils demonstrated their creative abilities, underscoring the relevance of vocational training in fostering self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods.

The tree planting initiative at NOUN’s Centre for Human Resource Development reflects the university’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability, education, and community development.
