THE STORY UPDATE: Death Toll Rises To 25 As Bandits Open Fire On Travellers, 14 Wounded

At least 25 persons were confirmed killed and 14 injured along Rukuba road in Jos north local government area of Plateau state on Saturday morning.

A group of attackers had confronted a convoy of five buses containing passengers travelling from Bauchi enroute Jos to Ikare in Ondo state.

It was gathered that the travellers ran into a crowd of sympathisers that were in procession for the mass burial of those killed in a Miango attack last week.

Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong has reacted to the incident in a statement signed by spokesperson Simon Makut.

The Governor condemned the attack and warned troublemakers bent on formenting trouble in the state to desist as the government will not allow any form of lawlessness to disrupt the peace of the state.

The Governor said that attacks on innocent citizens, no their matter their background, will never be tolerated in the State and those who are found to be behind such attacks will be dealt with decisively to serve as deterrent and restore public order.

The statement added that the Governor has also directed security agencies to swiftly identify and arrest perpetrators.

The spokesperson of Operation Safe Haven, a military task force set up to maintain peace in Plateau State, Major Ishaku Takwa, said 12 persons have been arrested in connection with the incident, while normalcy has been restored in the area.

It would be recall that The Story, reported that some travellers were shot dead in Jos north local government area of Plateau State.

Security sources said that at least 15 corpses have been deposited at the morgue of Plateau Specialist Hospital.

It was gathered that the victims were passing through Jos when they ran into gunmen who opened fire on their vehicles.

The whereabouts of some of the victims were unknown as of the time of filing this report.
