A video that went viral on social media, especially Facebook, showed a scene where the officer were overwhelmed by the suspected assassins before setting the van aflame.
Trouble started on Thursday 18th March at Ukacha Junction Neni, area of Anaocha local government area of the state when the hooligans stormed the police spot unexpectedly and unleach terror on them.
The bandits held the police hostage
in a gun battle that lasted for over 30 minutes before re-enforcement came the way of the helpless policemen from the headquarters.
It was reliably gathered that one police officer died while another is still battling for life in an undisclosed hospital where the officers were rushed to for medical attention after they sustained severe degree of injuries from gunshots.
Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, who confirmed the incidence said: “There was an attack on Police patrol team at Ukacha junction Neni ,Anaocha LGA by yet to be identified gunmen while on nipping point today 18/3/2021 at about 4:30pm.
“The hoodlums numbering over twenty with three Sienna buses and motorcycles engaged the police in a gun-duel which lasted for over 30mins before reinforcements from the State headquarters forcing the hoodlums to escape.
“As a result, two police operatives sustained gunshot injuries and rushed to the hospital for medical attention where one was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.
“The Commissioner of police CP Monday Kuryas, visited the scene for on the spot assessment”.
Meanwhile, investigation is ongoing and effort is being intensified in order to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident, arrest perpetrators of the heinous act and bring them to book, the image maker disclosed.
