Police Officer, Three Others Killed In Delta, As Gunmen Invade Church In Ondo

A yet to be identified police officer and a cyclist have been murdered by gunmen at Uti Street Junction in Effurun, Uvwie local government area of Delta State.

It was gathered that the hoodlums escaped with the serving rifles of the deceased policeman unhindered.

Trouble started around 11:00am on Sunday, June 5, 2022, when the security operative who was on a bike was shot, killing him on the spot.

It was alleged that the gunmen escaped with two police rifles after killing the victim and the motorcyclist, as the officer was bearing a colleague’s gun alongside his own when the hooligan attacked.

Meanwhile, in the last one month, the town of Sapele, the administrative headquarter of Sapele local government area of the state has been under siege of cult as no day passes by without the sad news of murder.

Recently, one person identified as Shagari, an artisan (mechanic) was shot dead along New Road by Oghenetega.

Similarly, another person simply identified as Samson, popularly known as DJ LimPOPO was shot behind Wado Hotel later died after rushing him to an undisclosed hospital.

Several text and WhatsApp messages sent to the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Edafe Bright, were not replied.

In another development, gunmen have attacked St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, the administrative headquarter of Owo local government area of Ondo State.

Unconfirmed number of bodies had been removed from the church, with many who sustained injuries rushed to the Federal Medical Center, FMC, in Owo.

Owo is the hometown of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen stormed the church while service was going on and opened fire on the congregation.

One of the eyewitness who craved anonymity stated that the worshippers were caught off guard when the attackers arrived.

He added that the number of casualties could be higher because some attendees who were taken to the hospital gave up the ghost.

On condition of anonymity, a nurse in Owo disclosed that there are insufficient medical professionals on duty to attend to the injured victims in the hospital’s emergency unit, while some of the casualties have been transferred to private hospitals.
