The Plateau Progressive Movement (PPM) has called for the removal of Senator Shehu Umar Buba as Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, citing what it described as “grave allegations” against the lawmaker.
In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Comrade Dachum Daniel Kajang, and made available to journalists in Kaduna, the group also demanded Senator Buba’s immediate arrest and prosecution.
“The Plateau Progressive Movement calls for the immediate relief of Senator Shehu Umar Buba from his chairmanship position on the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence.
His continued presence in this role is untenable, given the serious allegations against him. It is imperative that the Senate acts swiftly to restore public confidence in our institutions and demonstrate that no one is above the law,” the statement read.
The group alleged that Senator Buba has been linked to activities undermining national security, including alleged incitement of violence in Toro and Tafawa Balewa local government areas of Bauchi State, which they claimed has led to loss of lives and unrest.
According to PPM, “Eyewitness accounts and credible reports indicate that Senator Buba has actively engaged with armed groups, including bandits, who have wreaked havoc on our communities.
Disturbingly, it has come to our attention that he facilitated the transportation of injured bandit fighters for medical treatment.”
The group also cited the emergence of a video purportedly showing the movement of arms and motorcycles from Senator Buba’s residence to Zamfara State as further evidence that warranted urgent investigation.
“This blatant disregard for law and order is a direct affront to the citizens of Nigeria and a stark reminder of the growing nexus between political power and criminal activity,” PPM warned.
“The implications are dire; they embolden criminal elements and undermine the efforts of our security forces.”
The group urged the Senate and relevant security agencies to take decisive action, insisting that the time for complacency had passed.
“The citizens of Plateau State deserve nothing less than justice and accountability. Those who threaten our security must be brought to book,” the statement stressed.
Senator Buba Responds
When contacted, Senator Buba’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Comrade Sabo Muhammad, dismissed the allegations as “unsubstantiated” and politically motivated.
“The allegations are part of a sponsored campaign to smear his rising political profile by disgruntled elements. They are malicious, lack insight, and fail to provide verifiable details,” Muhammad said.
He added that the claims of the senator’s involvement in banditry were baseless, stressing that peace had largely returned to Toro and Tafawa Balewa local government areas.
“This calumny will not deter Senator Buba from discharging his responsibilities at the Senate as the only APC senator from Bauchi State,” he maintained.
