There was palpable fear as passengers on Itakpe-Ujevwu train were said to have been stranded as the train reportedly derailed after leaving the Itakpe train station in Kogi State.

Trouble started on Thursday July 4, 2024, after the train took off from the station in Itakpe.

Although, details were still sketchy, it was reliably learnt that security operatives were said to have been immediately deployed in the location to protect apprehensive passengers.

It was gathered that coach two of the train derailed off the track but it could not be confirmed if there were fatalities.

As it stands, passengers that booked for Friday, 5th July 2024, to travel from Itakpe to Ujevwu are currently contemplating other means of transporting home.

Over 20 passengers boarded the train from Ujevwu train station, in Udu local government area of Delta State on Wednesday 3rd July 2024, to Abuja, and were hoping to return on Friday.

Sadly, some of the passengers have booked online on Thursday afternoon of July 4, 2024, only to be hinted of the development the evening of same day.

It remains uncertain whether the management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, would make refunds to them.

But an email obtained by The Story, reads: “Due to the unforeseen technical issue and the suspension of train operations today, we request that you provide your valid commercial account details for the refund of the booking(s) made for 5th July, 2024.

Thank you,
NRC-WITS.
