Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Tuesday, performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the reconstruction of the Warri–Sapele–Benin Dual Carriageway, describing the initiative as a shining example of renewed partnership between the Federal and State Governments for the benefit of Nigerians.

Speaking at the ceremony held in Uvwie and Okpe Local Government Areas, Governor Oborevwori said the project underscores the commitment of both tiers of government to improving national infrastructure and easing the burden of road users across the South-South region.

He noted that the road, a critical national artery linking Delta to Edo and other parts of the country, had for years posed serious challenges to motorists and commuters.

“This reconstruction marks another milestone in the infrastructure renewal drive under the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government, in synergy with the Delta State Government,” the governor stated.

The governor explained that the 10-kilometre stretch under reconstruction features reinforced concrete pavement, widened shoulders, and advanced stormwater drainage systems, all designed to enhance durability and ensure the safety of road users.

Oborevwori further disclosed that the state government had paid ₦10 billion in compensation to accelerate work on the Second Niger Bridge access road, emphasizing his administration’s focus on improving connectivity and transportation efficiency statewide.

He lamented the long years of hardship endured by commuters and transporters on the Warri–Sapele–Benin corridor but expressed optimism that the new project would not only boost mobility and trade but also strengthen security.

“Bad roads often provide cover for criminals. This project will make travel safer and improve the response of security agencies,” he said.

The governor assured residents of his administration’s unwavering commitment to peace, infrastructure, and security, noting that leadership should be defined by service and legacy.

“At over sixty, I seek no personal gain. My desire is to leave behind projects that generations of Deltans will remember me for,” Oborevwori said.

He also promised to address the Uvwie people’s requests regarding the Mother and Child Hospital and the provision of a 500KVA transformer.

Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, described the project as the brainchild of a visionary leader determined to redefine Delta’s infrastructure narrative.

He explained that each lane of the dual carriageway spans 8.8 metres exceeding the national standard and assured that the project would be completed within 12 months.

General Manager of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), Engr. Thomas Feng, pledged timely delivery of the project in line with international standards, describing the initiative as a testament to the governor’s transformative leadership.

Also speaking, Chairman of Uvwie Local Government Area, Chief Anthony Ofoni, announced that the Airport Road in Effurun would henceforth be named Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori Way in honour of the governor’s enduring contributions to infrastructure development.

The Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom and Chairman of the Urhobo Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM Emmanuel Sideso, Abe I, commended the governor’s sustained commitment to urban renewal, noting that ongoing flyover and road expansion projects in Warri and Effurun had already begun reshaping the region’s economic outlook.

The event drew top government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, and industry captains, all of whom hailed the reconstruction as a bold step toward a safer, more prosperous Delta State.
