The Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has urged Nigerians to strengthen the bonds of unity and avoid actions that divide the nation.
Speaking on Wednesday at the Cenotaph in Asaba during the celebration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, the Governor, represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, described the day as a time for remembrance, reflection, and renewal.
He emphasized that Nigerians must honour the sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers by working together to build a prosperous and united country.
“The true strength of Delta lies in its people. As we mark Nigeria’s independence, let us also embrace, independence in our daily lives, independence from ethnic division and rivalry; independence from dependency by embracing hard work, enterprise, and creativity; and independence from forces that divide us, by uniting under the common banner of One Delta,” he said.
Governor Oborevwori noted that Independence Day offers Nigerians the opportunity to reflect on victories and struggles, learn from past experiences, and renew their commitment to the values of peace, unity, and progress.
He commended Deltans both at home and abroad for their support, which he described as the strength behind his administration’s achievements, and congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the national milestone, praying for wisdom and strength as he leads the country.
Highlighting the strides of his administration under the MORE Agenda, Governor Oborevwori outlined key achievements in infrastructure, health, education, and security.
Infrastructure: Ongoing projects include highway construction, flyovers, urban and rural roads, drainage systems, and flood control schemes aimed at connecting communities, boosting commerce, and improving living conditions.
Healthcare: The state is upgrading hospitals, enhancing primary health centres, and equipping them with modern diagnostic machines.
Free healthcare services are being provided to pregnant women, children under five, widows, and the elderly, while thousands are enrolled under the state’s health insurance scheme.
Education and Technology: The government is investing in ICT hubs and training centres to prepare youths for the digital age, while also supporting vulnerable groups through job creation initiatives and social welfare programmes.
Peace and Security: The Governor reiterated his administration’s determination to safeguard lives and property, noting that Delta’s waterways are now safer for commerce and travel due to sustained collaboration with security agencies.
Oborevwori cautioned against divisive criticisms, urging Deltans to embrace constructive engagement and support ongoing reforms.
He emphasized that sustainable progress requires collective effort from government, citizens, the private sector, traditional rulers, and religious leaders.
“To our youths, I say: channel your energy into positive ventures. You are not just leaders of tomorrow, but change-makers of today. To our elders and community leaders: continue to preserve our culture and promote peace.
“And to the private sector: partner with us, invest in Delta, and help us build industries and create jobs,” the Governor stated.
He concluded with a call for renewed faith in God, peace, justice, and unity as the foundations for building a stronger Delta and a greater Nigeria.
The ceremony featured inspection of the Guard of Honour and a colourful march-past by military and paramilitary agencies, with top government officials, traditional rulers, and other dignitaries in attendance.
