…urges opposition to contest
The UDU LGA Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Pastor Victor Agbula Igbule has urged members and the leadership of the party in Delta State to fully participate forthcoming local government elections.
He called on the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) to ensure a level playing ground for all parties, without instances of undue advantage to the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
Pastor Agbula, stated this shortly after the Delta central meeting of the party held in Udu Local Government Area.
He said that the preconceptions that the LGA elections are a one-sided affair are rather illogical and fallacious.
He said “The Local Government Council elections have been officially declared and I seize this opportunity to call on every patriotic Deltan in the Social Democratic Party who has an interest in his or her local government, to go ahead and contest.
“Delta State belongs to us all, and everyone has a right to be involved in the administration of the state at all levels.
“The local government is the grassroot and the most important component for the flow of development.
“Hence, it should not be left to only members of the ruling party as a selection process.
The SDP UDU LGA Chairman further tasked the leadership of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission with the principle of fairness and the need for a level playing ground.
He insisted that all candidates should be accorded the same rights and privileges.
“The Delta State Independent Electoral Commission DSIEC has a huge task ahead of it, and it has a name and its integrity to uphold. The resources being used for the elections are for Deltans irrespective of political affiliation.
“Therefore, the commission and its leadership must maintain fair and equitable and ensure a level playing ground for all political parties and their candidates”
Pst Agbula stated that the commonwealth of the state was in the contest at the LGA elections, and the SDP would rally around to put up a good fight, while commending the party for making the forms free.
“The wealth of the state is what we contest to administer for and on behalf of the people.
“Hence, the SDP family will rally around for LGA elections as a build-up to the next general elections.
“The state leadership of the party deserves commendation for making the nomination forms free of charge.
“However, we must engage the elections over the resources available and for the good of Deltans”, the one time Student Union President added.
