House Reps Demands Army’s Investigation Report, Justice For Okuama Community

The House of Representatives has called on the Nigerian Army to release its investigation report and rebuild homes destroyed in the aftermath of the Okuama incident.

Lawmakers also urged the army to release detained members of the Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State, or charge them to court.

This call followed a motion by Francis Waive (APC-Delta) during plenary on Tuesday in Abuja. Waive recalled the killing of 17 soldiers on March 14, 2024, in Okuama, which led to the army’s reprisal attacks and mass arrests.

Despite claims that the perpetrators were known, no arrests have been made, while several innocent residents, including Prof. Arthur Ekpekpo and others, have remained in detention, with Pa James Oghoroko reportedly dying in custody.

Waive lamented that a judicial inquiry was never considered, and the Committee on Defence’s probe was met with non-cooperation from the army. One year later, the military has yet to release its findings.

Speaker Abbas Tajudeen mandated the Committee on Defence to ensure compliance and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
