A house-help, identified by his real name as Usang Bassey Effiong and not Ben Peters, as he earlier claimed, disconnected the CCTV Cameras in his employer’s house and made away with their Toyota Camry saloon Car 2008 Model, $5, 000, six packet shirts and a Motorola Android phone.
The house-help was engaged by a 73-year-old retiree, Alexander Okoye, and his wife, Njideka, on October 12th.
Effiong, a member of a robbery syndicate, who disguise as house-helps to unsuspecting members of the public, came onboard after one of the gang member, Matthew Johnson Abam, was fired.
It was learnt that on his (Abam) sack, he gave adequate information to Effiong, who took over from him at the residence of Okoye, in Lagos State.
According to Effiong, he noted where Mr. Okoye, usually hid his bedroom key, picked it and made a duplicate of the living room key to enable him gain access into the room.
He said on October 23rd, he made up his mind to break into the couple’s bedroom, noting that to do so undetected, he disconnected the CCTV camera that would have recorded his activities.
He then picked up the bedroom key and constructively broke into the couple’s room, stole their valuables and thereafter, drove off with their car on October 24th 2018.
He disclosed that robbing the couple was easy for him as the former house-help they dismissed before employing him, Abam, was a member of his syndicate who had furnished him with relevant information about the couple even before he came to live with them.
Meanwhile, the police in Lagos state have arrested the said Effiong, a house-help that carted away his employers valuables 11 days after employment.
The arrest of Effiong, followed a petition the distraught couple filed to the Commissioner of Police in Lagos state, CP Edgal Imohimi.
Based on their complaint, the CP directed CSP Kemi Adedeji and team attached to the Command’s Human rights section to launch a manhunt for the fleeing househelp.
On Tuesday, December 12th, the said Ben Peters was arrested at his hideout in Agege, Lagos and some of the stolen items recovered from him.
Police investigation revealed that the suspects real name is Usang Bassey Effiong and not Ben Peters as he made his employers to believe.
Both suspects are currently undergoing interrogation with a view to helping the Police, arrest their partners in crime and recover the stolen items.
