Unknown gunmen have killed a member of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Honourable Rilwanu Gadagau, on the Kaduna-Zaria highway. Gadagau, who represented Giwa Constituency of the state, was the chairman of the Committee on Local Government and Rural Development in the Assembly.
He was reported to have been killed on Monday night by bandits who attacked travellers on the Kaduna-Zaria road. The body of the lawmaker was later discovered on Wednesday morning.
The lawmaker’s body was said to have been found near Mawai, a village just about 13 kilometres from the Kaduna State capital.
Confirming the incident, the Speaker of the Assembly, Honourable Yusuf Zailani, described the death of the lawmaker as devastating.
In a statement signed by his media aide on Wednesday, Ibrahim Dahiru Danfulani, the Speaker said he was informed that the body of the lawmaker was discovered in a morgue on Wednesday, suspected to have been one of those killed by bandits on Monday night on the Kaduna-Zaria highway.
“This is tragic and painful. We are in deep grief over this sad incident,” the Speaker said.
The Speaker also commiserated with families of others who were killed during the same attack.
Meanwhile, the state police command said a good Samaritan from Zura village in Zaria Local Government Area discovered the motionless body of Gadagau in the bush. The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Muhammad Jalige, stated this in a statement made available to newsmen in Kaduna on Wednesday.
Jalige said: “The Kaduna State Police Command is in receipt of an unfortunate incident of culpable homicide through the Divisional Police Officer, Saye Division, Zaria that today, December 15, at about 9:00 a.m., information received from a good Samaritan from Zura village has it that an unidentified motionless human body is seen lying in the bush, hence, the report to the appropriate authorities for urgent action.
“The DPO, on getting the information, immediately mobilised and led a team of policemen to the scene where a close and physical observation of the corpse was carried out and all necessary photographs were taken. However, signs of violent injuries were noticed all over the lifeless body. The body was, thereafter, evacuated to Hajiya Gambo Sawaba Hospital for autopsy.
“Meanwhile, preliminary investigation reveals the identity of the deceased as one Honourable Rilwanu Aminu Gadagau, a member of the Kaduna State House of Assembly representing Giwa West constituency.
