Trouble started on 4th March 2021, when Rita, who resides at No. 8 Izawa Street, off Emesiri Street, Jakpa Road, Delta State, urged the mother to wade into the martial crisis rocking the son’s marriage.
The victim, an indigene of Abia State, was learnt was having argument with her about 70 years old mother over a martial issue between her (mother’s) son and his wife when the neighbours stormed their apartment.
According to the victim, in the heat of the argument, the mother ordered her to move out of the house, leading to further argument.
She disclosed that her mother held her on her hair while she was trying to pull her hair from the mother’s grip, attracted neighbours and passersby who attacked her with dangerous weapons.
Rita, noted that the men descended on her with cane, blocks and what have you as if she had previously offended them.
Several pleas that she had no issues to warrant such assault on her fell on deaf ears until they ended up hospitalizing her with bruises all over her body.
Rita, is currently on admission at the Central Hospital, Warri, where doctors and nurses are giving her medical attention.
A nurse (name withheld) treating her disclosed that one injection prescribed for her treatment cost N2, 500, noting that the dose is twice a day.
The nurse also hinted that the victim’s mother said her daughter did not lay hands on her.
It was learnt that the doctor also demanded N10, 000 to carryout cleaning of the eyes for her to be able to see with both eyes.
Sources privy to the assault said the matter has been officially reported at the police station for investigation.
A human rights activist, the Director-General (DG), Young Nigerian Rights Organization, Comrade Victor Ojei, condemned in strong terms the attack on the woman.
“This is violence against persons which goes contrary to the law. Let us say no to violence against women”.
Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Edafe Bright, confirmed the accident but promised to get back with details on whether the attackers have been arrested.
At press time, The Story, could not ascertain whether anyone connected with the attack have been arrested.
