The Delta State Police Command has recorded significant operational successes in its fight against crime and criminality, following a sustained intelligence-led and community-focused policing strategy adopted since January 2025.

This was disclosed on Monday, December 15, 2025, by the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Abaniwonda S. Olufemi, psc, during a press briefing in Asaba, where he presented an overview of the Command’s achievements within the year under review.

CP Abaniwonda said the Command worked closely with sister security agencies, vigilante groups, anti-cult volunteers, Police Community Relations Committees (PCRC), civil society organisations, traditional rulers, and other community stakeholders to dismantle criminal networks and enhance public safety across the state.

Among the major breakthroughs highlighted was the arrest of two prime suspects linked to the murder of retired Justice Ifeoma Okogwu, who was killed at her residence on November 24, 2025.

The Commissioner disclosed that operatives of the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Asaba, acting on credible intelligence, arrested a security guard attached to the residence, who later confessed and led detectives to another accomplice.

Stolen items belonging to the late jurist were recovered, while investigations continue to apprehend other fleeing suspects.

The Command also recorded a decisive operation against suspected kidnappers in the Obiaruku forest, where one suspect was neutralised during a gun battle with operatives of the State Anti-Cult Unit (SACU). An AK-47 rifle, 42 rounds of live ammunition, mobile phones, and charms were recovered during the operation.

Further successes were achieved by the CP-Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT), which arrested suspected armed robbers and cultists in Abraka, Ughelli, Oghara, and Sapele.

The operations led to the recovery of pump-action guns, locally made firearms, live cartridges, ammunition, and stolen tricycles, dealing a major blow to organised criminal gangs operating in the state.

In a major crackdown on drug-related activities, CP Abaniwonda revealed that 161 suspects were arrested during a raid on a notorious drug hideout in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area. Large quantities of illicit substances, including various grades of cannabis, codeine, tramadol, and other hard drugs, were recovered.

Additional arrests and seizures were made during the interception of a commercial bus along the Asaba–Onitsha route.

According to the Commissioner, the Command’s aggressive policing approach has resulted in the recovery of a total of 144 firearms, including AK-47/AK-49 rifles, Beretta pistols, pump-action guns, and locally fabricated weapons, as well as 6,930 rounds of ammunition.

The Command also recovered ₦36 million in ransom payments, rescued 18 kidnapped victims, and recovered 28 stolen vehicles.

Within the same period, the Delta State Police Command arrested 627 suspects, comprising suspected armed robbers, kidnappers, murder suspects, cultists, and individuals involved in rape and defilement cases.

CP Abaniwonda attributed these achievements to the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, to ensure a safe and crime-free environment nationwide, as well as the dedication and professionalism of officers and men of the Command.

He commended the media for responsible reportage and sustained partnership with the Police, and expressed appreciation to law-abiding citizens, traditional rulers, and community leaders for their cooperation and support.

As the festive season approaches, the Commissioner assured residents that the Command remains fully prepared to ensure a peaceful and secure Yuletide, urging members of the public to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies.

He also released the Command’s emergency control room numbers and wished all Deltans a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year in advance.
