The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, has cautioned officers under his command against extortion, unlawful detention, and the indiscriminate searching of citizens’ mobile phones.
Speaking during a strategic conference with senior officers held at the Police Officers’ Mess, Police Headquarters, Asaba, on Tuesday, the CP aligned his directives with the recent leadership agenda set by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
He stressed the need for discipline, professionalism, and intelligence-led policing as the Command enters a new operational cycle.
Olufemi issued a stern warning to Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), tactical commanders, and other operatives, making it clear that extortion and other unprofessional practices would not be tolerated under his watch.
“Policemen are not allowed to randomly stop people and search their mobile phones. Any officer found engaging in this embarrassing act will be decisively dealt with,” he said.
The CP further directed officers to adopt firm but civil enforcement strategies on highways, while enhancing intelligence gathering on black spots, kidnapping routes, and robbery-prone corridors.
He also charged them to maintain strong synergy with sister security agencies and local communities in line with the IGP’s inter-agency cooperation mandate.
Reaffirming his commitment to human rights and accountability, Olufemi ordered senior officers to strengthen both pre-deployment briefings and post-deployment debriefs to ensure operational discipline.
He assured residents that robust security architecture would be maintained and expanded throughout the “ember months” and festive period.
The Police Commissioner urged members of the public to remain vigilant and to share credible information with the Command, either by visiting the nearest police station or contacting the dedicated distress line: 08036684974.
SP Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Command, signed the statement.
