Delta State has emerged overall champion at the 2025 Basic Education School Sports Competition, organized by the Nigerian Football Association (NFA) in collaboration with the National School Sport Federation (NSSF), after an impressive showing at the national finals held in Abuja from September 21 to 27.
The victorious team was today received in Asaba by the Executive Chairman of the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Hon. Samuel Mariere, who commended their performance as they formally presented the National Championship Cup to him.
Hon. Mariere disclosed that the children who represented Delta were randomly selected from schools across the state, yet surprised many by returning home as national champions.
He attributed the feat to the supportive leadership of the state’s education-friendly Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.
“His grace precedes us, and with it, we shall continue to emerge victorious as we prepare to represent Nigeria at the CAF under-15 competition,” Mariere said.
The SUBEB Chairman further revealed that Governor Oborevwori has approved the commencement of a structured Basic School Sports programme across the state.
Under the initiative, schools from local government to senatorial level will compete, with the grand finals to be hosted in Asaba.
He noted that the victorious team would now be handed over to the Delta State Sports Commission for formal grooming, adding that the programme would cover not only football but other sporting disciplines as well.
Providing details of the Abuja tournament, the Sports Officer in charge of Basic Education School Sports, Mr. Joshua Akporiaye, said Delta State topped the championship table with 13 points, while Ekiti and Enugu States came second and third with 10 and 7 points respectively.
This landmark victory automatically qualifies Delta State to represent Nigeria at the forthcoming under-15 Confederation of African Football (CAF) competition.
