Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has declared that the creation of Anioma State is no longer a political aspiration but a concrete reality in motion, thanks to the commitment of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He emphasized that only the APC has the political will and national reach to make Anioma State a reality.
Speaking to journalists at his country home in Idumuje-Ugboko on Sunday, April 13, 2025, Senator Nwoko stressed that neither the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) nor the Labour Party has the capacity or influence to deliver such a major constitutional change.
According to him, the support of the ruling APC is essential, and for Anioma people to realize their long-standing dream of statehood, they must align politically with the APC.
“The only party that can deliver Anioma State is the APC,” Nwoko said.
“Even the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, is considering crossing over to the APC because the PDP is gradually losing national relevance.”
Nwoko revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given firm assurances regarding the state’s creation.
“The President has made a promise, and that is why people are joining the APC in large numbers—including your Governor,” he added.
Anioma State, if created, would be carved out of the existing Delta State, with Asaba proposed as the state capital.
This would result in Delta being split into two states, Anioma State representing the Delta North zone, and a possible ‘New Delta’ comprising the South and Central senatorial districts, with Warri as a likely capital.
Senator Nwoko, a key legislative player in the 10th Senate, highlighted that he is currently a member of several major Senate Committees, including those on Police Affairs, EFCC, NDLEA, Finance, Petroleum and Gas, Education, and Roads.
“I have sponsored 27 bills so far, but the most significant to me remains the Bill for the Creation of Anioma State,” he said.
“While other bills are national in scope, this one speaks directly to the hopes of my people.”
Explaining his move to the APC, Nwoko said it was not a decision taken lightly. “I didn’t join the APC for political convenience.
“I joined because the President, the Senate President, and the APC National Chairman made concrete promises to me and my people,” he said.
He cited critical infrastructure commitments including the completion of the Okpai Power Plant, the Ogwashi-Uku Dam, and a proposed new dam in Idumuje-Ugboko.
A few days prior, the APC National Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, visited Agbor in Ika South Local Government Area, where a well-attended rally was held.
During the event, Ganduje publicly affirmed the federal government’s backing for the Anioma State initiative.
“Anioma State is no longer just a dream, it is now a done deal,” Ganduje declared.
“This move is about fairness, equity, and development for the people of Delta North.”
The rally saw massive defections from the PDP and other political groups into the APC, signaling growing support for the state creation agenda.
Senator Nwoko concluded by urging Deltans to embrace a forward-looking vision.
“Creating Anioma State will bring prosperity and government closer to our people, just like the historic creation of Delta and Edo States from the old Bendel. If we are truly serious about the future, we must unite and support the party with the will to deliver, and that party is the APC.”
