The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended six of its members for a period of six months following an alleged plot to impeach the Speaker, Hon. Aondona Dajoh.
Those affected by the disciplinary action include Hon. Alfred Berger (Makurdi North), Hon. Terna Shimawua (Kian State Constituency), Hon. Cyril Ekong (Obi State Constituency), and Hon. James Umoru (Apa State Constituency), among others.
The suspension, which followed a heated plenary session, was premised on what the House leadership described as “unparliamentary conduct” and “deliberate attempts to destabilize the legislative process.”
Speaker Dajoh, who presided over the session, maintained that while dissent is welcome in a democracy, actions that threaten the stability of the Assembly would not be condoned.
“The House remains committed to upholding the integrity of the legislature and ensuring that the mandate of the people of Benue State is not subverted by internal crises,” he declared.
The suspension marks a dramatic twist in the Assembly’s leadership tussle, which has heightened political tension in the state’s legislative arm.
