The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced its decision to boycott the upcoming local government election scheduled for October 5.
State chairman, Aaron Chukwuemeka cited an ongoing legal case involving the Tony Okocha-led faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a significant reason for the party’s withdrawal from the electoral process.
According to Daily Post, Chukwuemeka made the announcement during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the party’s secretariat in Port Harcourt.
He indicated that the legal issues are a concern for the PDP’s integrity and strategy in the election.
Notably, Chukwuemeka is aligned with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, who has influence within the state party structure.
This decision follows the PDP’s recent congresses in Rivers, where they secured a legal victory against a faction loyal to the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
The PDP is now navigating the complexities of intra-party dynamics and external legal challenges that could affect its position in the state’s political landscape.
