The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, has identified over-speeding and wrongful overtaking as the cause of the road accident involving Nigerian-British boxer Anthony Joshua, which claimed two lives along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
According to the FRSC, the crash occurred at about 11:00 a.m. on Monday in front of Sinoma, before Danco, and involved a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua, which collided with a stationary truck.
In a statement made available to journalists, the FRSC disclosed that five persons were involved in the crash—two died, one sustained injuries, while two escaped unhurt.
The Corps explained that the driver of the Lexus was over-speeding and attempted to overtake from the right-hand side, resulting in a collision with the stationary vehicle.
Anthony Joshua, who was seated in the rear of the vehicle, reportedly sustained minor injuries and was immediately taken to an undisclosed hospital by his security detail for medical attention.
The bodies of the deceased were deposited at the Livewell Hospital Morgue, Sagamu.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that an investigation into the incident has commenced.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, assured the public that all circumstances surrounding the accident would be thoroughly examined.
He also expressed the Command’s condolences to the families of the victims and pledged that further updates would be provided as investigations progress.
