ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu may be considering a strategic political move that could significantly reshape Nigeria’s power dynamics, as sources within the Presidency reveal that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Kano State Governor and leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), is being considered for appointment as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

Though the Presidency has yet to confirm the development officially, a senior aide familiar with the matter disclosed that discussions are ongoing and that Tinubu views Kwankwaso as a “bridge-builder” whose inclusion in the federal cabinet could bolster national unity and expand the ruling party’s reach, particularly in the North-West.

“The President is seriously considering Senator Kwankwaso for the SGF position. The idea is to bring more political balance and to recognize his influence, especially in Kano and other northern states,” the source said on condition of anonymity.

Kwankwaso, a former Minister of Defence and a two-time governor of Kano State, emerged as a significant political force during the 2023 presidential election, where he ran on the NNPP platform and drew considerable youth support in northern Nigeria.

His potential inclusion in Tinubu’s cabinet would signal an attempt to broaden the administration’s coalition beyond traditional party lines.

If appointed, Kwankwaso would become one of the highest-ranking officials in Tinubu’s administration, responsible for coordinating government policies and ensuring effective inter-ministerial collaboration.

The SGF is a pivotal position, often viewed as the engine room of the federal executive.

Political analysts say the move, if confirmed, would be both symbolic and strategic.

“Bringing Kwankwaso into the federal cabinet could neutralize opposition voices in the North and consolidate APC’s grip ahead of 2027,” said Dr. Habiba.

However, the potential appointment is likely to stir debate within the All Progressives Congress (APC), where some party loyalists may view the inclusion of an opposition figure as controversial.

Others argue that the gesture could reflect President Tinubu’s longstanding reputation for political pragmatism and inclusivity.

Neither the Presidency nor Kwankwaso’s media team has issued an official comment as of the time of filing this report.
