ABUJA, April 9, 2025 – The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a stern warning as it forecasts three days of potentially hazardous weather conditions, including moderate to heavy rainfall, across six states: Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Edo, Bayelsa, Delta, and Ogun.

In its latest bulletin released Tuesday, NiMet warned that the downpour, expected from Wednesday, April 9 to Friday, April 11, could trigger flash floods, strong winds, and widespread disruption, particularly in flood-prone areas where infrastructure is already under strain.

The advisory also noted the likelihood of lighter rainfall in several additional states, including Lagos, Ondo, Ekiti, Abia, Imo, and Delta, compounding concerns for public safety and mobility.

NiMet cautioned against complacency, urging residents to avoid driving through waterlogged roads due to the risk of strong undercurrents, and warned that slippery roads and reduced visibility could significantly increase the likelihood of accidents.

The agency further advised against leaving electrical appliances plugged in during storms, underscoring the threat of power surges or electrocution.

The forecast once again highlights the country’s vulnerability to extreme weather events, as calls grow louder for improved infrastructure, drainage systems, and a more proactive disaster response from state governments.

Communities in the affected states are urged to remain on high alert and heed all public safety directives.

It would be recall that vehicular movement was brought to a standstill on Wednesday evening along Old Lagos-Agbor Road in Boji-Boji Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, following several hours of relentless rainfall.

The heavy downpour led to severe flooding, trapping vehicles and sweeping away motorcycles as commuters struggled to navigate the waterlogged road. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

Meanwhile, as the State continues to experience rapid urban development, the government has called for a state-wide positive action to mitigate the risks of flooding and other natural disasters.

The call comes after a heavy downpour that swept through parts of the state, affecting vehicles and motorcycles, particularly in Ika axis
