The Honourable Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Sea Port, Comrade Ini Ememobong, has officially tendered his resignation from the Akwa Ibom State Executive Council in a significant political development
“I write to most sincerely appreciate the confidence and opportunity you offered me to serve in your cabinet in two critical Ministries, Information and Special Duties & Ibom Deep Sea Port”.
The resignation, dated June 6, 2025, and addressed to Governor Pastor Umo Eno, cites a clear fallout stemming from political realignment within the state’s leadership.
Ememobong, in his letter, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in two “critical ministries” but ultimately stepped down due to ideological differences.
“The experience garnered within this period has been very enlightening and I profoundly value the privileged opportunity to have served in your administration”.
In the letter, which was received and stamped by the Office of the Governor on June 6, Ememobong alluded to a directive from the governor requiring cabinet members to defect from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“You have directed that any appointee who is unwilling to accompany you to switch from the People’s Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, should resign”.
“You have directed that any appointee who is unwilling to accompany you to switch from the People’s Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress should resign,” he wrote.
“Ipso facto… I will be unable to join the All Progressives Congress.”
“Ipso facto, based on my personal conviction, I will be unable to join the All Progressives Congress.
“I hereby most respectfully tender my resignation as Honourable Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Sea Port and a member of the State Executive Council”.
The move signals not only personal conviction but also points to a deeper political rift within the state’s governance.
Ememobong’s decision underscores growing tension around party loyalty, ideology, and the future of opposition politics in Akwa Ibom.
Political observers believe the resignation could have ripple effects across the administration, especially among loyalists who share Ememobong’s stance but remain undecided or apprehensive about switching allegiance.
Comrade Ememobong, a known stalwart of the PDP and respected technocrat, stated that his time in office was “very enlightening” and that he “profoundly value the privileged opportunity” to have served.
“May I most heartily again thank you for the opportunity to serve your administration and our state”.
His resignation is expected to spark further debate about political pressure, party supremacy, and the state of democracy within subnational governments.
No official response has been issued yet from Governor Umo Eno’s office regarding the resignation or the reported directive compelling political defection.
