Edo State has been thrown into political tension as acting local government chairmen across the state face a wave of impeachments and forced resignations, barely hours after 63 councillors received their certificates of return from the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC).
The certificates were issued on Monday morning in Benin City by EDSIEC Chairman, Hon. Jonathan Aifuobhokhan, represented by Hon. (Dr) Ikhuoriah Solomon, who charged the newly sworn-in councillors to uphold integrity and deliver quality representation to their constituencies.
He declared: “The successful conduct of the 2025 by-election is not only a testament to the Commission’s efficiency but also a reaffirmation of the people’s trust in the democratic process. Today, we celebrate victors who are stepping into roles of service, leadership, and development.”
But the celebration quickly gave way to crisis as councillors in several local government areas began issuing impeachment notices almost immediately after receiving their certificates.
Esan West: Acting Chairman, Hon. Godsent Agboibo, resigned on Monday to stave off impeachment. In a resignation letter dated September 22, 2025, Agboibo wrote that his decision was driven by “recent developments” and pledged continued loyalty to Governor Monday Okpebholo.
Etsako East: Councillors signed an impeachment notice against Acting Chairman Hon. Solomon Ogumah. The crisis escalated as thugs reportedly took over the council secretariat in Okpella.
Uhunmwode: Nine councillors impeached Acting Chairman Hon. Osas Iradia Benjamin, citing “abuse of office, financial recklessness, embezzlement, anti-party activities, and disobedience to constituted authorities.”
Reacting to the upheaval, Hon. Ogumah of Etsako East appealed for urgent intervention from Governor Okpebholo, warning that the situation could spiral out of control.
> “I was told to resign or be removed by councillors. I have confirmed from the House of Assembly that no such directive exists, and I know only the Assembly and the governor have such powers.”
Meanwhile, former Edo North APC youth leader, Dirisu Otinomo, warned that the unfolding drama could plunge the party into deep crisis if left unchecked.
The sudden wave of leadership shake-ups across Edo’s 18 LGAs has deepened uncertainty within the ruling party, raising fears of instability in grassroots governance.
