… As Diri Signs Community Safety Corps Bill Into Law

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has signed into law the new Community Safety Corps bill passed by the State House of Assembly.

The new law will now coordinate the activities of the existing special security outfits – Operation Doo-Akpo, Volunteer and Vigilante Force.

The Governor signed the bill at a function where he commissioned new security vans and communication gadgets to the Operation Doo-Akpo for improved security in the State.

“Today, it gives me great joy to relaunch Operation Doo Akpo. Necessarily, the programme has been rejigged, redesigned and refreshed to be more responsive and responsible in carrying out its duties.

“In this first phase, I am commissioning for immediate deployment, 50 brand new Hilux patrol vehicles, a new state-wide command and control system based on Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) Technology.

“Forty brand new motorcycles, a K-9-unit (term for dogs specifically trained to assist law-enforcement personnel), body armour for our men and one additional distress call line which is toll free to callers because government will pay for all distress calls made on the line.

“This toll-free line is 0-8-0-0-1-2-3-0-1-2-3. These assets have been procured at great cost to government, but there can be no cost too exorbitant for the safety and protection of our people”, Gov. Diri Stated.
