Three persons have lost their lives following a tragic road accident involving an ambulance conveying a corpse for burial in Umuahia, Abia State.

The incident occurred on Thursday along the busy Aba Road axis, specifically at the Big Gutter area, when the ambulance reportedly rammed into a commercial tricycle, popularly known as “Keke.”

Eyewitness accounts indicate that two of the tricycle passengers died instantly at the scene, while a third victim later succumbed to injuries at a hospital.

Sources at the scene alleged that the ambulance, driven by a woman, was travelling at high speed when it collided with the tricycle, which was approaching from the Ubakala–Old Umuahia route.

The accident drew a crowd of sympathisers, who promptly alerted security operatives.

Police officers arrived shortly after and assisted in evacuating the injured victims to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, for emergency treatment.

Further details revealed that the ambulance was transporting the remains of a 77-year-old woman to the Isi Court area of Umuahia for burial at the time of the crash.

As of the time of filing this report, relevant authorities have yet to release an official statement on the incident.

However, residents who witnessed the accident attributed it largely to excessive speeding by the ambulance driver.

When contacted, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Abia State Sector Command, stated that the incident had not been formally reported to their office.
