A cheer of jubilation sounded early hours of Saturday in different parts of Rivers State, immediately counting was concluded at the venue of a By-election organised by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) with Senator Magnus Abe declared winner and the governorship candidate of the party in Rivers State.
Overcoming some powerful political headwinds and a lock-step resistance to his ambition with this victory, Sen. Abe will now go on to take on candidates of other political parties in the 2023 governorship election in Rivers state and secure a chance at changing the current political trajectory in Rivers State,
Abe, reputed to be highly grassrooted and popular, now has his path to victory widened as time steadily moves towards March 2023, date of governorship elections nationwide.
Although, his victory was far smooth, being heads and shoulders above other contenders for the SDP ticket, it was no less dramatic.
This development means different things to different people. For Rivers people, those most affected by the nearly generational failure of leadership in the state, it is time to put partisan bickering aside and “reach across the aisle” to support the man who has proven overtime to posses the mental wizardry needed to tackle the State’s torrent of problems.
