The government disclosed that it has identified the killer disease as Yellow Fever which has claimed over 30 lives.
Briefing journalists Friday 6th November 2020, at the Conference Hall of the ministry of Information, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Mordi Ononye, disclosed that results from samples of those who died showed yellow fever as the cause of their deaths.
The health Commissioner revealed that 22 persons have died from the disease as against the 30 reported, stating that seven active cases have been identified as at Friday November 6th, 2020.
According to him, identifying the cause of deaths gave the Government a sense of direction as it has began immediate outbreak responsibilities by intimating concerned stakeholders for effective outbreak response.
Ononye, hinted that samples have been sent to the Regional Laboratory in Dakar, Senegal for final confirmation, pointing out that the state was expecting the results in one month time.
He said the state government had directed an immediate yellow fever vaccination to prevent the spread of the ailment.
“The vaccination will start from the local government where we first recorded a case. We are up to the task to ensure everything is done to ensure the outbreak does not escalate beyond this” he noted.
Director General (DG), Delta State Orientation Bureau, Barr. Eugene Uzom, however assured Deltans of adequate sensitization on the outbreak of the disease.
