Textron Systems, an American defense technology company, has entered into an agreement to supply advanced surveillance drones to Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited.
This private security firm has been engaged by the Federal Government to protect critical oil and gas infrastructure in the Niger Delta.
As part of the deal, Textron Systems will provide three Aerosonde Mk 4.7 Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) drones to Tantita, a company owned by Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo, a prominent Niger Delta security contractor and former militant leader.
The Aerosonde Mk 4.7 is recognized for its long-endurance capabilities, specifically designed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations.
With its VTOL capability, the drone can take off and land in confined spaces without requiring a runway, making it adept at monitoring challenging terrains such as creeks, swamps, and offshore environments prevalent in the Niger Delta.
Industry analysts predict that the deployment of these drones will significantly bolster Tantita’s surveillance capabilities, particularly in combating pipeline vandalism, oil theft, and other forms of economic sabotage that have long afflicted Nigeria’s oil-producing regions.
The drones are designed to operate for extended periods, providing real-time imagery and data to ground control stations.
The announcement has elicited mixed reactions from the Nigerian public. While some commentators perceive the move as a constructive effort to enhance the security of national oil assets, others express concerns regarding the increasing sophistication of equipment in the hands of private security contractors.
Critics have urged the Federal Government to implement rigorous regulation and oversight of private security firms equipped with such advanced military-grade technology, warning of the potential risks associated with misuse.
Meanwhile, supporters view the initiative as a welcome advancement that could improve pipeline protection and mitigate crude oil theft.
As a key player in Nigeria’s oil pipeline surveillance program, Tantita Security Services has reportedly contributed to improved crude oil production levels through enhanced monitoring of critical infrastructure since its appointment by the Federal Government.
