A Sudanese military aircraft crashed in a residential area near the Wadi Seidna military airport in northern Omdurman on Tuesday, killing at least 46 people, including both military personnel and civilians.

The Antonov aircraft reportedly went down late Tuesday during takeoff from the military airbase, which is part of the greater Khartoum area.

According to the Khartoum Media Office, 10 others were injured in the crash. Initially, the health ministry reported 20 fatalities, stating that the plane had crashed into a civilian home in the Karrari district of Omdurman. Among the victims was Major-General Bahr Ahmed, a senior commander in Khartoum.

The Sudanese military, currently engaged in a conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, confirmed the incident in a statement. Authorities reported that emergency responders successfully contained the fire at the crash site.

Eyewitnesses in northern Omdurman described hearing a loud explosion, with the crash damaging multiple homes and triggering power outages in the area.
