While enumerating challenges associated with modeling and fashion careers, Queen Ibiye said that “Models in the Nigerian society are always seen as prostitutes but we’re not. We love our looks and take special interest in ourselves. When people see us they give us all sorts of names that we’re not” she said.
In Nigeria, Models pass through a lot of stress because of the negative perception they already have about us. But that is not true. Models are very decent people and responsible girls in the society irrespective of how we’re seen.
Though some models do some silly things that undermine the career just to be up there. But generally, we’re decent and compassionate people.
And because of the way we dress most times which, to me, is restricted to only when you are contesting people misconstrue us as prostitutes partly because of our stage appearances and the exposure of some parts of our bodies in some cases.
That is what modeling and beauty pageantry entails. But when we are not contesting and living our normal lives we dress properly even more decent than the ordinary girl on the street that is not a model.
According to Queen Ibiye, “there are lots of challenges we face on daily basis. People want to go out with you, mess around with you and still say nasty things about you.
“This is not right at all. Sometimes, we may run out of money to meet with our female personal needs as a girl and when you honestly ask someone for financial assistance, the person would want to sleep with you first before giving you the assistance (if any).
“This has always been the constraints to models.
But in as much as there are challenges the benefits are awesome because when you are victorious and crowned, you improve on your status socially and economically. People identify with your success; you meet with top government officials and even sit with Kings and Queens and you become celebrity.
“I therefore, urge young girls not to be discouraged with what they hear about models and brace up and face these challenges. I also know that when you are committed and God is with you success is always achieved. No pain no gain. No success without sacrifice. Modeling is a way of life and a profiting career”, Ibiye said.
