The Aniocha-Oshimili Elders’ Association, popularly known as Izu Ikei, has thrown its weight behind Senator Ned Nwoko’s renewed push for the creation of Anioma State, affirming that the struggle is long-standing and rooted in justice and equity.

Speaking at a special meeting of the association held in Asaba over the weekend, the Chairman, Prince Sir Clement Okonjo, emphasized that the Anioma people are resolute in their demand for a state of their own.

“We want Anioma State and we have made our position clear to the person driving this noble agitation. Let it be known that Senator Ned Nwoko did not begin this struggle today; he has been at it since his days in the House of Representatives,” Prince Okonjo stated.

He recalled the controversies that followed the creation of Delta State in 1991, particularly the debates over the choice of Asaba as the state capital, noting that the Anioma quest for statehood predates recent calls.

“This is not a new struggle; it is a continuation of a just cause that must be achieved,” he added.

Addressing concerns over the geopolitical zoning of the proposed state, the elder statesman dismissed such arguments as distractions.

According to him, what matters most is the empowerment and development that will come with Anioma State.

“With our own state, we will have our Governor, Senators, Representatives, State Assembly members, Councillors, and countless opportunities for our people.

“We will also receive our fair allocation from the Federation Account. So, the debate over South-East or South-South is immaterial, Anioma will remain where it is,” he stressed.

Prince Okonjo urged Anioma leaders and stakeholders to rally behind Senator Nwoko, commending his consistency and courage in pursuing the cause. He criticized some past leaders from the region who, despite having the chance, failed to advance the agitation.

“We in Izu Ikei are solidly behind Senator Nwoko. This is our time, and we must not allow detractors to derail us.

“Those who do not want Anioma State are free to relocate if they wish. For us, we want Anioma and we will remain here to fight for it. Period,” he declared emphatically.

The resounding endorsement by Izu Ikei adds momentum to Senator Nwoko’s advocacy, reinforcing the call for fairness, representation, and accelerated development for the Anioma people.
