Travellers Stranded As Bridge Collapses In Delta

Commercial activities were paralysed while motorists and travellers are stranded following the collapse of a bridge along the Ughelli-Asaba road that is under construction in Delta State.

The high brow bridge along Ogwashi-Uku axis of the road collapsed, leaving motorists and commuters plying the busy route stranded.

The collapsed bridge was part of the ongoing construction and dualisatiion of the road by the Delta State Government.

Although the cause of the incident could not be ascertain, there were speculations that the water level became overwhelmed by the culvert built to ease the volume of water during the project execution, was inadequate, according to a source.

The bridge, located in Ogwashi-Uku, Aniocha south local government area of the State, which links neighbouring villages, reportedly caved in on Monday May 15th 2023.

Apart from halting business activities, vehicular movements to and fro the area were distorted, forcing travellers to trek several kilometers and alternative routes before gaining access to either of the three councils of Aniocha south, Oshimili south and north.

The bridge, which has finally bowed to the water pressure, may not have been done to specification, calling the attention of the authority concerned.

Potential travellers from Warri, Ughelli, Oleh, Ozoro, Kwale and other communities have resulted to alternative routes.

As at press time, Commissioner for Works in the State, Mr. Noel Omodon, could not be reached.
