Over fifty corps members in the Warri Zonal area participated in the launch of a training programme aimed at enhancing their teaching skills, organized by the Tompolo Foundation in collaboration with the Delta State National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Speaking at the official launch, the Chairman and Founder of the Tompolo Foundation, High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, reaffirmed the foundation’s unwavering commitment to initiatives that promote quality education.
Represented by Dr. Paul Bebenimibo, Chief Ekpemupolo emphasized the vital role of teachers in shaping the future of society and the importance of equipping corps members with essential pedagogical skills.
“Growing up in the creeks of the Niger Delta, and now serving as Chairman of the Tompolo Foundation, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by corps members teaching in rural and riverine communities.
“While they help bridge the gap of inadequate teachers, many lack the foundational skills needed to teach effectively,” Ekpemupolo stated.
He explained that the training programme was initiated to address this gap, ensuring corps members are better prepared to engage students, foster critical thinking, and improve learning outcomes.
Ekpemupolo noted that the foundation has consistently supported corps members through stipends, accommodation, and other incentives, especially those deployed to underserved areas.
“Well-trained corps members will leave a lasting impact on the students they teach, fostering a generation better equipped for the future,” he added, stressing that quality education remains central to national development.
Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, represented by Chief Ejiroghene Erifevieme, commended the initiative and urged other stakeholders to emulate the Tompolo Foundation’s efforts in supporting education.
Also speaking, Chief MacDonald Igbaduwei applauded the foundation for targeting corps members in rural areas, saying the training would sharpen their teaching abilities and make learning more engaging for students.
A keynote lecture titled “Pedagogical Skills: A Key Imperative for Enhancing Quality Education in Nigeria” was delivered by Dr. Oghenevwede Oyovwi.
He highlighted the significance of training corps members for deployment in both public and private schools, especially in underserved areas. Dr. Oyovwi outlined the benefits of pedagogical training, including improved confidence, better classroom management, and stronger community engagement.
Dr. Job Bebenimibo, Director of Education Projects at the Tompolo Foundation, announced that the first batch of 50 corps members will officially begin training on Wednesday, March 18, 2025.
The NYSC was established on May 22, 1973, during the military regime of Head of State General Yakubu Gowon, to promote national unity, self-reliance, and community development.
